On 25 August, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia A.M. Dzhioev took part in a round table discussion entitled ‘The Republic of South Ossetia before and after the recognition of its state independence by the Russian Federation,’ organised by the Republican Political Party Unity as part of the celebrations marking the 17th anniversary of the recognition of the state independence of the Republic of South Ossetia by the Russian Federation.
The event was attended by Zurab Kokoev, Chairman of the Unity Party, Tarzan Kokoity, Deputy of the 1st-4th convocations of the Parliament of South Ossetia, Spartak Tomaev, Head of the Parliament of South Ossetia Committee on Budget and Taxes, Roman Khoroshilov, 3rd Secretary of the Russian Embassy in South Ossetia, Murat Vaneev, Head of the Internal Policy Department of the President of South Ossetia, Yuri Vazagov, Head of the Information and Analytical Department of the Administration of the President of South Ossetia, Associate Professor of the Department of Philosophy of South Ossetian State University Kosta Dzugaev, historian and ethnographer Robert Kulumbegov, Honoured Journalist of South Ossetia Inal Pliev, Director of School No. 1 in Tskhinval Rusudan Gobozova.
The participants discussed the significance of the Russian leadership's decision on 26 August 2008 to recognise South Ossetia's independence, confirming the correctness of the decisions taken by the Republic 35 years ago, including the proclamation of the Republic in 1990 and the adoption of the Act of Independence in 1992, participants shared their memories of the events of seventeen years ago.
Akhsar Dzhioev emphasised in his speech that the new geopolitical realities created 17 years ago had led to fundamental changes in the situation in the region, primarily in terms of security, and noted the exceptionally constructive development of South Ossetian-Russian relations based on alliance and integration.
