On March 18, 1991 Georgian neo-nazies seized an Ural car and disembarked 25 Ossetians, who were driving through the territory, which at that time was controlled by Georgian armed formations. Women and children were released, but 12 men after horrific tortures were buried alive, and the place of burial was leveled with a bulldozer.

On February 23, Akhsar Dzhioev, the South Ossetian Foreign Minister, participated in a solemn flower-laying ceremony, dedicated to the Defenders of the Fatherland Day and the 30th anniversary of the South Ossetian Ministry of Defense. Flowers were laid at the Monument of the Defenders of the Fatherland and at the chapel of the Memorial Cemetery of the Victims of the Georgian aggression in the courtyard of secondary school No. 5.
