Commentary by the Representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of South Ossetia in connection with the destructive verdicts of the European Court of Human Rights

On 14 October, the long-discredited European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) took another biased step by upholding Georgia's claim against Russia and awarding the aggressor, recognised as such by the European Union's international commission, compensation of €253 million for alleged human rights violations related to the 2008 conflict.

This extremely biased and politicised decision, which fully reflects the ‘level of justice’ of this organisation, perfectly demonstrates the true nature of the European Union. By rejecting the claims of South Ossetian citizens in 2021, the European court has demonstrated its absolute incompetence, unprincipled trampling on the rights of thousands of South Ossetian residents – victims of Georgian aggression who, apparently, in the understanding of ‘enlightened Europe’ are second-class citizens.

It is precisely such approaches to whitewashing the aggressor's crimes, double standards, segregation and discrimination that lead to even greater tragedies and their repetition. Unfortunately, history and particularly the history of Europe itself, has taught Europeans nothing and they stubbornly continue to repeat the same failures.

Against the backdrop of such actions by European structures, the main thing for South Ossetia's safe development is to strengthen its statehood and improve its mechanisms for working with friendly countries, primarily with the Russian Federation, which is the guarantor of peace and stability in the region.
